The Open Bowl

Rated 4.8 out of 5
Based on 65 reviews

As seen in Bon Appetit, Epicurious, and more. The Open Bowl is ideal for salads, noodles, and saucy meals. Our ceramics are crafted from natural Korean soils and hand-finished, and as such, each piece is one-of-a-kind and imperfect. Yet despite ceramics’ delicate reputation, ours are sturdy enough for everyday use, as well as dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

We're setting the table.

Our foray into Tabletop is one that’s meant to elevate small, everyday moments, and to make people comfortable at the table, so they can pull up a seat and stay a while.

Dining together is an intimate tradition, and we wanted our first dining offering to feel personal. Thus, we partnered with Soil Baker, Hye Rin Yang, a South Korean female ceramicist who blends expert culinary and design expertise into timeless, long-lasting pieces.

Human hands are involved in every step of the making. Each design was hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel and fired using traditional techniques, drawing upon the age-old craftsmanship of Yeoju, South Korea, where artisans have been producing ceramics since 918 AD.

The clay for our collection is drawn from numerous soils (Dune, three, and Grotto, five) for a clay blend that was invented by Soil Baker craftsmen, exclusively for us. The result is a versatile color depth that changes in various light - simple enough to let your food stand out, yet detailed enough to warrant a second look.

"The star here is the new stoneware from one of our favorite brands, Material: a gorgeous, stony grey-green that looks good with any soft white."
"A collection of hand-finished ceramics that you’ll want to pass down for generations."
"The hand-finished Open Bowl is basically a blate (bowl + plate), my preferred vessel for grain bowls, salad, pasta, and stew. It’s available in two colors; I’m going for the darker shade, which makes a colorful meal really stand out."

Perfect

I love this collection. It was exactly what I was looking for. This little bowl is perfect for ice cream, or fruit and yogurt. Would also be great for nuts or olives to spread around the table. The texture of the spoon in the bowl is a bit different. It’s almost a sandy feel. Not smooth like most dishes. But that’s what I like about it. Awesome color too.

Perfect size

I'd been looking for bowls exactly like these, so how can I give them less than 5 stars? As with all Material products, they're of great quality. My one grip is they're more expensive than I'd want them to be, which makes me cautious around them. Also, the photos make it very hard to tell the actual color and I had to email to find out. In my opinion, they're grey on the outside and a very dark navy on the inside. If you have black items in your kitchen, they'll still match.

Stunning dinnerware

These are truly beautiful plates. I purchased the Grotto color. The glaze has a slight sheen and pebbled texture. And the weight of these plates are elegant. Similar price points to Heath Ceramic but feels more unique and special. I personally love that these are from Soil Baker - a female owned, Korean business. I like these plates so much that I plan to order more in Dune to round out a 8-person set.
