What is Material?

Material creates thoughtfully designed things for your kitchen, transforming everyday objects into items that bring you joy. No more hand-me-down melted plastic tools or junk drawers full of I-used-them-once items (avocado slicer, anyone?). We're obsessed with good design, high-performing products, and making "keep for life" kitchenware.

How much is shipping?

We offer free UPS ground shipping on all our orders within the continental U.S. No promotion codes to remember. For shipping to Canada, we collect shipping payment that also covers duties and customs.

What is your return policy?

If you’re unhappy with your Material product within 60 days of receipt, email us at hello@materialkitchen.com to arrange a return or exchange. You can also read more about our return policy here.

How do I give Material as a gift?

First, that makes you a very tasteful gift-giver. Just enter the recipient’s shipping address into the designated fields during checkout. If you don’t know what you want to gift, keep it simple and purchase a gift card so they can select their Material themselves.

Are Material products dishwasher safe?

The Metal Spoon, The Only Tongs, The Slotted Spatula, The Slotted Spoon and The Air Whisk are totally dishwasher safe. The 8” Knife, The Serrated 6” Knife, The Almost 4” Knife, The Wood Spoon and The Angled Board should be hand-washed.

Do Material products have a warranty?

All of our products are designed to last. If one of your items is damaged, email hello@materialkitchen.com so we can fix or replace it. The only items that we do not offer a lifetime guarantee on are our limited edition products, given that they are one-time offerings.

How should I care for my Material knives?

Washing: Hand-washing your knives with a non-abrasive sponge is the way to go. Steer clear of the dishwasher to prevent damage to the blade and handle. Sharpening: We recommend an easy-to-use knife sharpener or if your knife needs an extra bit of TLC, a yearly professional sharpening. We also recommend honing your knife after 4-5 heavy duty uses, or as soon as you find yourself struggling to cut through a tomato with ease.

How are Material knives made?

Our knives are made from three layers of Japanese stainless steel. The outer two layers are corrosion-resistant steel that make the knives easy to care for (no need to wipe down immediately), and the inner layer is a high-carbon steel that provides superior durability and strength for excellent cutting performance. Our knives have a Rockwell hardness of 59 ± 1, are ice-tempered to increase hardness, and feature a 26-degree blade to ensure optimal sharpness. Both have stain-resistant handles and a smooth, hand-finished bolster that provides a firm and comfortable grip.

Where are Material products made?

Most of our products are made in a region of Southern China known for its storied history in knife-making and kitchenware manufacturing. Kitchen products have been crafted in this part of the world for over 1,400 years, and the factories we chose have over a century of expertise under their belts. We work to ensure that all our manufacturers are both ethically and environmentally compliant.

TryNow FAQs
How does the Try At Home program work?

Your 30-day trial begins when your items are delivered. We’ll authorize your card - which does set aside those funds - but you won’t be charged.

Don’t love it? Send us an email and we will get you set up with a return label. From there, the authorization on your account will be released within a few business days (bank processing time).

Was my card charged when I placed the order?

We validate your card through an authorization for the full amount of the order. You'll see a pending authorization on your statement, but rest assured that's not a charge. We'll only charge your card for the items you decide to keep at the end of your trial period.

When does the trial period begin?

We track when the package was delivered to your house, which starts the trial period. You have until the end of your trial period to postmark returns.

How do you know not to charge my card for the items I’m returning?

We provide an ample amount of time for any returns to arrive at our warehouse before charging your card. Once the items are returned, we inspect and update your order status so you will not be charged.

What if I decided to keep the items but then want to initiate a return?

No problem! Our regular return policy is still in effect.
